Product Description
Szürkebarát, internationally known as Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio, is a classic white wine grape variety with French origins and a long tradition of cultivation throughout Europe. It is a colour mutation of Pinot Noir, and its berries are particularly distinctive, developing characteristic greyish-pink, copper or reddish-grey tones as they ripen.
The variety is remarkably versatile in winemaking. Depending on the growing conditions, harvest time and winemaking style, it can produce anything from fresh, crisp and fruity dry white wines to richer, full-bodied and spicy styles, as well as late-harvest wines.
Main Characteristics
Ripening time: Early to medium, depending on the growing region, vineyard location and vintage.
Berry: Small to medium-sized, round, with characteristic greyish-pink to copper-coloured skin.
Cluster: Small to medium-sized and generally compact.
Wine character: Depending on the style, wines can show aromas of ripe pear, apple, stone fruit and citrus, often accompanied by subtle spicy, smoky and honeyed notes.
Acidity: Generally fresh and balanced, strongly influenced by climate and harvest time.
Use: Primarily suitable for high-quality white wine production, including dry and late-harvest styles.
Key Advantages
- Internationally recognised as Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio.
- A highly versatile white wine grape variety.
- Can produce both fresh, elegant wines and richer, full-bodied styles.
- Characteristic fruity, spicy and subtly smoky aromas.
- Suitable for producing dry and late-harvest wines.
- An excellent choice for growers looking for a variety with both Hungarian tradition and international recognition.
Growing Characteristics
Szürkebarát performs particularly well in sunny vineyard locations with suitable air circulation and well-drained soil. The variety is capable of adapting to different growing conditions, although climate has a significant influence on the resulting wine style. Cooler conditions generally favour fresher, more vibrant wines, while warmer sites can produce richer, fuller and more concentrated styles. Pinot Gris is successfully cultivated in both cool and warmer wine-growing regions.
Because its clusters can be relatively compact, appropriate canopy management and plant protection are important, particularly in humid conditions. With balanced pruning, suitable crop management and proper care, Szürkebarát can produce high-quality grapes suitable for a wide range of premium white wine styles.
