Product Description
Olaszrizling, internationally known as Welschriesling, is one of the most important and widely cultivated white wine grape varieties in Hungary and Central Europe. Despite its Hungarian name and the word “Riesling” in its international name, it is not related to Rhine Riesling (Riesling).
The variety is highly valued for its reliable productivity, refreshing acidity and versatile winemaking potential. Depending on the growing region, vintage and winemaking style, Olaszrizling can produce everything from fresh, light and crisp everyday wines to complex, mineral-driven and full-bodied premium white wines. In Hungary, it is particularly associated with the Balaton region, where it is capable of producing distinctive, terroir-driven wines.
Main Characteristics
Ripening time: Medium to late, generally harvested from September to early October, depending on the growing region and vintage.
Berry: Small to medium-sized, round, developing a greenish-yellow to golden-yellow colour when fully ripe.
Cluster: Small to medium-sized, cylindrical or conical and generally compact.
Wine character: Fresh and elegant, typically showing notes of green apple, citrus, almond and subtle floral aromas, often complemented by mineral characteristics depending on the growing site.
Acidity: Typically fresh and lively, providing good structure and balance.
Use: Primarily suitable for dry white wine production, but can also be used for late-harvest and other special wine styles.
Key Advantages
- One of the most important white wine grape varieties in Hungary.
- Reliable and productive under suitable growing conditions.
- Produces wines with fresh, lively acidity.
- Characteristic citrus, apple and subtle almond notes.
- Excellent ability to express the character of the vineyard and terroir.
- Suitable for both fresh, easy-drinking and premium, complex white wines.
- Particularly important in the Balaton wine regions and other Hungarian wine-growing areas.
Growing Characteristics
Olaszrizling is a vigorous and relatively adaptable variety that performs particularly well in sunny vineyard locations with favourable exposure. Its later ripening means that warm sites with a sufficiently long growing season are preferred for achieving full maturity and optimal flavour development.
The variety is capable of producing regular and abundant crops, although balanced pruning and crop-load management are important for maintaining high fruit quality. Good canopy management and appropriate plant protection also help keep the clusters healthy during the ripening period.
Under favourable conditions, Olaszrizling combines good productivity, refreshing acidity and excellent adaptability, making it a reliable choice for growers interested in producing anything from fresh everyday white wines to distinctive, terroir-driven premium wines.
