Product Description

Irsai Olivér is a highly aromatic, early-ripening Hungarian white wine grape variety, created by Hungarian grape breeder Pál Kocsis in 1930 from a cross between Pozsonyi Fehér and Csabagyöngye. It has become one of Hungary’s best-known aromatic varieties, appreciated for its intense Muscat-like fragrance, fresh fruit character and exceptionally early ripening.

The variety is primarily used for producing fresh, aromatic white wines, but its sweet, pleasantly aromatic grapes are also suitable for fresh consumption. Wines made from Irsai Olivér are typically light, refreshing and intensely fragrant, making the variety particularly popular for youthful wine styles.

Growing Characteristics

Irsai Olivér is a vigorous and productive variety that performs particularly well in sunny, warm growing locations. Thanks to its very early ripening, it can reach full maturity relatively quickly and is therefore suitable for a wide range of Hungarian and Central European growing conditions.

The timing of harvest is particularly important, as its characteristic aromas and acidity can decline if the grapes become overripe. Balanced pruning, appropriate crop-load management and good canopy ventilation help maintain healthy grapes and optimal fruit quality.

With proper care, Irsai Olivér produces highly fragrant, fruity grapes with a distinctive Muscat character, making it an excellent choice for growers interested in one of Hungary’s most recognisable aromatic white wine varieties.
