Product Description
Black Isabella (also known as Isabella or Strawberry Grape) is a traditional American-origin table and direct-producer grape variety, renowned worldwide for its exceptional hardiness and distinctive strawberry-like aroma. It is a vigorous and undemanding variety, making it an excellent choice for covering pergolas and arbours as well as for home garden cultivation.
Main Characteristics
Ripening time: Late, generally ready for harvest from mid to late September.
Cluster: Medium-sized, cylindrical or conical and moderately loose, typically weighing 150–250 g.
Berry: Medium-sized, round, weighing approximately 3–5 g.
Colour: Dark blue to black, with a pronounced waxy bloom.
Flavour: Sweet-tart and juicy, with a distinctive strawberry-like (“labrusca”) aroma.
Seeds: Contains 2–4 seeds.
Growing Characteristics
Black Isabella is an extremely vigorous and reliably productive variety. It is particularly well suited for covering pergolas, arbours and fences, as it produces long shoots and dense foliage. It performs best in a sunny location, but also grows and produces well in partial shade. The clusters can remain on the vine for an extended period without significant loss of quality, allowing greater flexibility when choosing the time of harvest.
Resistance and Hardiness
One of the greatest advantages of Black Isabella is its excellent natural resistance and hardiness. It shows above-average tolerance to diseases and has outstanding frost resistance, tolerating temperatures down to approximately –25 °C. It requires relatively little plant protection, making it an excellent choice for beginner growers and those who prefer low-input cultivation.
