Product Description

Cabernet Franc is a classic French red wine grape variety with a long history in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley. It is also historically significant as a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carménère. Today, it is cultivated in many wine regions around the world and is valued for producing elegant, aromatic and beautifully structured red wines.

Compared with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc generally produces wines with a lighter body and softer tannin structure, while retaining excellent aromatic complexity. Typical wines show attractive red berry and dark fruit aromas accompanied by floral, spicy and characteristic herbal notes.

Main Characteristics

Ripening time: Medium, generally earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon, making it particularly interesting for moderately cool wine-growing regions.
Berry: Small to medium-sized, round, with a dark blue to blue-black skin.
Cluster: Small to medium-sized and generally moderately compact.
Wine character: Elegant and aromatic, typically displaying red berry, cherry and dark fruit notes, often accompanied by spicy, floral and subtle herbal aromas.
Tannins: Generally softer and less pronounced than Cabernet Sauvignon.
Use: Primarily suitable for high-quality red and rosé wine production, both as a single-varietal wine and as a component of blends.

Growing Characteristics

Cabernet Franc is a vigorous and productive variety that can perform particularly well in moderately cool to warm wine-growing regions. Compared with Cabernet Sauvignon, its earlier ripening can make it easier to achieve good maturity in cooler locations. It is also noted for better cold hardiness than many other Vitis vinifera varieties.

A sunny, well-ventilated location, regular pruning and balanced crop management help promote healthy fruit and even ripening. Excessive vine vigour should be avoided, as it can increase the variety’s characteristic herbal aromas. Under suitable conditions, Cabernet Franc produces high-quality grapes suitable for elegant varietal wines as well as complex premium blends.
