Product Description
Zenit is an early-ripening Hungarian white grape variety bred by Ferenc Király in Pécs in 1951 from a cross between Ezerjó and Bouvier. Originally known as Badacsony 7, the variety was officially registered in Hungary in 1976. Today, Zenit is one of the better-known modern Hungarian white grape varieties and is valued for its early ripening, reliable productivity and aromatic character.
Main Characteristics
Ripening time: Early, generally ripening from August to early September, depending on the growing location and season.
Berry: Small, round, greenish-white to yellowish when fully ripe.
Cluster: Medium-sized, shouldered and moderately loose.
Flavour: Pleasant and relatively neutral when eaten fresh, with delicate floral and fruity aromas developing in the fruit and wine.
Productivity: High and reliable under suitable growing conditions.
Use: Primarily suitable for white wine production, although ripe grapes can also be consumed fresh.
Key Advantages
- Early-ripening Hungarian variety.
- Reliable and abundant productivity.
- Attractive yellowish-white berries when fully ripe.
- Produces wines with fresh acidity and delicate floral and fruity aromas.
- Relatively low canopy-management requirements.
- A particularly interesting choice for growers looking for an authentic Hungarian grape variety.
Growing Characteristics
Zenit performs well in a sunny location and is considered relatively adaptable in terms of site and soil requirements. It is a productive variety and is reported to have reasonable drought tolerance and relatively low susceptibility to bunch rot.
Its frost tolerance is not one of its strongest characteristics, so a favourable, protected planting position is recommended in colder areas. Regular pruning and appropriate canopy management help maintain balanced growth and fruit quality. Zenit is particularly suitable for growers interested in producing aromatic, fresh Hungarian-style white wines.
