Product Description
Merlot is one of the world’s best-known and most widely cultivated red wine grape varieties, originating from the Bordeaux region of France. It is highly valued for producing smooth, fruit-driven and elegantly structured red wines and is also one of the classic components of Bordeaux blends. Merlot is particularly known for its plum, black cherry and dark berry aromas, combined with relatively soft, rounded tannins.
Depending on the climate, growing conditions and winemaking style, Merlot can produce everything from soft, approachable everyday wines to complex, full-bodied wines with excellent ageing potential.
Main Characteristics
Ripening time: Medium, generally ripening earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon, with the exact harvest period depending on climate and growing conditions.
Berry: Small to medium-sized, round, with a dark blue to blue-black skin.
Cluster: Medium-sized, generally cylindrical-conical and moderately compact.
Wine character: Smooth and fruit-forward, typically showing aromas of plum, black cherry and dark berries, often complemented by chocolate, spice, vanilla or herbal notes depending on ageing and winemaking.
Tannins: Generally softer and rounder than Cabernet Sauvignon, contributing to Merlot’s characteristic velvety texture.
Use: Primarily suitable for high-quality red wine production, both as a single-varietal wine and in blends.
Key Advantages
- One of the world’s most important red wine grape varieties.
- Produces smooth, rounded and fruit-driven red wines.
- Excellent both as a single-varietal wine and as a blending partner.
- Particularly important in traditional Bordeaux-style blends.
- Wines can range from easy-drinking and fruity to rich, complex and age-worthy.
- Performs successfully in many wine-growing regions around the world.
Growing Characteristics
Merlot performs particularly well in moderate to warm climates and is traditionally associated with the clay-rich soils of Bordeaux, although it adapts successfully to a wide range of wine-growing regions.
The variety ripens relatively early compared with Cabernet Sauvignon, which can be an advantage in cooler growing areas. Because Merlot has relatively thin-skinned berries, careful vineyard management and appropriate plant protection are important, particularly under humid conditions.
With a sunny growing position, balanced pruning and appropriate crop management, Merlot can produce high-quality grapes suitable for deeply coloured, aromatic wines with ripe fruit character, balanced acidity and smooth tannins.
