Product Description

Mathiász Jánosné Muscat is a traditional Hungarian table grape variety bred by János Mathiász by crossing Muscat Ottonel and Chasselas Rouge de Foncé. Its pleasant Muscat aroma, abundant yields and distinctive flesh-pink berry colour have made it a popular variety in home gardens to this day.

Main Characteristics

Ripening time: Mid-season, generally ready for harvest in the first half of September.
Cluster: Medium to large, shouldered and compact, typically weighing 150–300 g.
Berry: Medium-sized and round, weighing approximately 2.5–3 g.
Colour: Flesh-pink, with a paler or slightly greenish colour on the shaded side.
Flavour: Pleasantly sweet, with soft, melting flesh and an intense Muscat aroma.
Seeds: Contains 2–3 seeds.

Growing Characteristics

Mathiász Jánosné Muscat is a moderately vigorous and high-yielding variety that prefers nutrient-rich soils and sunny locations. It is sensitive to excessive crop load, so balanced pruning is particularly important for achieving high-quality fruit. The clusters tolerate transportation well, while the berries are less susceptible to physical damage thanks to their relatively thick skins.

Resistance and Hardiness

Mathiász Jánosné Muscat has moderate frost tolerance and average susceptibility to rot. With adequate nutrition and standard plant protection measures, it can be grown reliably. Thanks to its distinctive Muscat flavour, it is particularly well suited for fresh consumption, but can also be used to produce light, aromatic homemade wine.
