Product Description

Chardonnay is one of the world’s most famous and widely cultivated white wine grape varieties. Originating from Burgundy, France, it has become internationally renowned for its exceptional adaptability, versatility and outstanding winemaking potential. Depending on the growing conditions and winemaking style, Chardonnay can produce everything from fresh, crisp and mineral-driven wines to rich, full-bodied and complex styles.

Its relatively neutral varietal character makes it particularly expressive of its growing environment and winemaking techniques, which is one of the reasons Chardonnay is cultivated in wine regions throughout the world.

Main Characteristics

Ripening time: Early to medium, generally ripening from late August to September, depending on climate and growing conditions.
Berry: Small to medium-sized, round, developing a greenish-yellow to golden-yellow colour when fully ripe.
Cluster: Small to medium-sized, cylindrical or conical and generally compact.
Flavour: The grapes have a relatively neutral, pleasantly fruity character, while the resulting wines can develop notes of apple, citrus, pear, peach and tropical fruit, depending on ripeness and climate.
Use: Primarily suitable for high-quality white wine production and sparkling wines.

Growing Characteristics

Chardonnay performs best in a sunny location with well-drained soil and is capable of adapting to a relatively wide range of growing conditions. It generally buds early, making it susceptible to spring frost, so planting in frost-prone locations should be avoided where possible.

The variety can also be susceptible to certain fungal diseases and bunch rot, particularly under humid conditions, so good canopy management and appropriate plant protection are important.

Chardonnay’s combination of reliable quality, adaptability and exceptional winemaking versatility has made it one of the most important white wine grape varieties cultivated worldwide.
